My son's family have a rescue turkey called Bernard and any mention of Turkey dinner sends them into shock! He (Bernard) is proud of his large enclosure of chickens and ducks (he is the only male). and struts around. My son has had to expand the enclosure because of Avian flu.

I expect you've turned a lot of people into veggies with your description of turkey abbatoirs........

Happy Advent and Christmas, Dan! Essex Dogs is top of my TBR pile.

Hope you enjoy the book! I do wonder if all that blood and slaughter in my teens set me up to write about the Hundred Years’ War…

Have got to read it soon as my son has his eye on it too! I definitely think your early career choice has influenced you as all your descriptions of blood and slaughter in your books are very realistic!

What a really interesting piece a joy to read. Don't really celebrate Christmas these days, just dinner at Dad's and visiting family.

Because my father's job, my family never spent Christmas in my home country. So, Advent began for us with the arrival of my grandmothers. Time to bake biscuits, hot chocolate, pray, afternoons of knitting, and my siblings watching movies. Very sweet memories. But when I was 9, one of my grandmothers had an accident, couldn't travel, and we finally spent Christmas in my hometown. My grandmother had bought a turkey alive, and my 6 year old brother played a lot with the bird and even named it. Of course, it was a spectacular drama when she put Bobo (that was the turkey's name) in the oven. It was many years before my brother ate turkey again.

This! Thank you Dan!!! I love cultural anthropology? Is that what it's called? Whatever.. anyway! I love these cultural traditions that carry-on through the ages. That bind societies together. Have a wonderful December ❤️
