Married a stripper? I quite like that idea. Did I ever tell you about the time I married an exotic dancer in Zambia? I'm not allowed back in Zambia.

I’ve always looked at it like WW2. My Grandpa NEVER talked about the war. But he was a distinguished officer in the pacific. When he returned, he wanted to live a normal life.

Marshal may have just never talked about it.l with anyone. He went, vow fulfilled, time to carry on.

The arrival of a smart-looking copy of Essex Dogs, on top of podcast episode 4 AND a post on William Marshal makes today a very Dan Jones themed day for me 👍

"grieving(ish)" like you're at a funeral of someone you know some bad stuff about... exactly

And nice to see the straight lines from William to Wu-Tang Clan

Just finished The Greatest Knight... Would love for you to write a book on William Marshall

Was King Guy of Jerusalem not the same guy who participated in the ambush on Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1168 where Marshal was wounded/captured and his uncle killed? How likely is it that relations between William Marshal and Guy would have been cordial two decades later? I think that's really odd too.

Yes, wondered about that too after reading his biography. You'd think Marshal would have been mentioned by (near) contemporary Arab historians and biographers of Saladin such as Ibn Khallikan, or even in oral history if he'd played a significant role there. Or maybe there's a very different story that we could never guess at. A night or two with a female entertainer would surely be insignificant compared to a relationship with a high-ranking Arab woman -- that would surely create secrecy and a quick departure. Or perhaps he got very ill and didn't want that known, or had a change of heart regarding his mission. Many Christians are surprised to learn that Jesus is a prophet of Allah in the Muslim faith, I wonder how many Crusaders discovered that and paused, at least briefly.

What about his services for the Templars? He did make a deal to join their ranks before he died.
