Sometimes a good story catches your eye, and you have to share. Here’s one for this evening.
A couple who live in Lincoln removed a panel in their bathroom and found what seems like it might be a medieval drain hidden underneath.
Its main feature is a striking, grisly face somewhat reminiscent of the famous Lincoln imp gargoyle, hidden high up on top of a pillar in the city’s glorious cathedral.
Check it out:
This is in itself great. But I like the incidental details of the story, too.
The fellow who found the ‘imp drain’ was called Mr Vorster. Recalling the moment of discovery, he says: “I couldn’t believe it, I shouted up to my wife and said, ‘I’ve found a thing'.”
Many people in such a situation would try and polish up their heroic role in the story. But Lincoln is an earthy place, full of straight-talking people, who do not mince or waste their words.
It’s one of my favourite cities in England. This is another reason why.
Oh to have an imp’s stony lips tickling your soft undercarriage first thing in the morning and not even know it. It seems like owning a house in the UK is like playing archaeological lottery and I’m here for it.
Thanks for sharing. I have just been to Lincoln two days ago and indeed it is a great city.
