How time flies when you’re kicking your heels. Flicking old photos on my iPhone this week I found this image of Melrose Abbey exactly two years ago. I took it when we were in that town filming a show called Walking Britain’s Roman Roads.
The sky was blue, but as you can see, there was snow on the ground. We’d driven north the previous night from Hadrian’s Wall in the worst blizzard I’ve known in the U.K. On the radio news were reports of the spread of a new coronavirus outside Wuhan. We joked about it. Imagine if it came here!
Melrose was glorious, I do remember that. I’d love to go back. For a while my dad and I have been talking about a project: visiting the burial places of every British monarch. That would take us to Melrose for Alexander II of Scotland, with bonus points for the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce. It would also take us to places like Dunfermline, Worcester, Gloucester, Caen and Fontevraud. As well as the big guns at Windsor and Westminster.
Anyway. That’s for the future. This week I’m travelling, so posts might be less frequent than usual. But we’ll have a discussion thread for subscribers on Wednesday and a podcast episode on Friday. And normal service will resume next week.
If you’d like to support this Substack with a subscription, I’d really love you forever.
Stay frosty.

A tour of the graves of every monarch?!? I would pay to see that! I bet your dad is a hoot.
Good luck with your travels and thanks for a nice surprise on a Saturday evening! Love the idea of visiting royal burial places! That just might be the plans for this summer, with my family. Making it a tour of the burial places of our Swedish monarchs! Thanks for the inspiration!
