THE EASTER SUNDAY SNAP
The Resurrection according to Albrecht Dürer and Christ’s sepulchre shot on iPhone
Back in 2018 I went to Jerusalem for a week, dividing my time there equally between fine dining and hardcore sightseeing. It’s one of my favourite places in the world: heavy with history like a ripe and sunbaked fruit tree.
This was the best photo I could manage of the shrine around Christ’s tomb at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
I know, I know. Wonky, overexposed and featuring a really nasty striped polo shirt in the foreground. I did my best, but I was being shooed by a friar of some sort. Next time I will do better.
In the meantime, for this Easter Sunday here’s something a bit more impressive: Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut of the Resurrection, which dates to the early sixteenth century.
I bought a complete collection of Dürer woodcuts this week, mainly for tattoo inspo. But that’s another story.
Have a great week - I’m back home for a bit so normal(ish) service on History, Etc will be resumed.
