Woken at dawn by a guy a quarter of my height, we decided to skip cartoons and hit the road. A few minutes later, here we were, in the little town of Marazion, opposite St Michael’s Mount, with its twelfth-century castle on top. There was no one on the beach with us besides our shadows. The tide was going out, although not fast enough for us to walk over the causeway and see the castle before breakfast-time. But some things are just fine to look at from far away.
Last week’s Ask Me Anything thread threw up a whole load of interesting questions, most notably about America, the Second Amendment and the legacy of medieval peacekeeping. I’m still travelling (Cornwall now, southern Spain next) but this week I’ll try to post something coherent and sensible/sensitive/considered on that topic. It’s also the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee… can we take any more royal rumblings? Let’s see how things unfold.
In the meantime, enjoy the weekend.

This weekend I wanted to combine sun, History, and adventure sports. We are in the Paracas National Reserve, 3 hours away from Lima. After walking along the beaches, visiting islands, seeing geoglyphs, going to the museum, and trying to answer my 7-year-old daughter's question about where babies come from, we went to the desert. I had to drive another 1 hour to arrive to an oasis and get a sandboarding experience. After a spectacular crash and having sand in unspeakable part of my body, the next few times I did pretty well. Today my back pain reminds me that I'm not 20 anymore! Enjoy your trip, Dan!
What a lovely start to Sunday morning. I’ve also had to admire from a distance this weekend. Cardiff Castle 😌
Hope you all enjoy the rest of your holiday x
