I have always liked Rich - a solid brother who took his chance and was unlucky to lose at Bosworth. Henry VII was at least equal unpleasant and only had a very tenuous claim to the crown

Dan has always had a downer on him !

Thanks for the informative post today, Dan. I knew nothing about Buck but now I do. I also have a new metaphor think is brilliant, "admire the Amazon rainforest logger for sipping his coffee through a paper straw." Lol! Well done!

As Edward the 4th brother he was absolutely loyal and an amazing leader

So I always found it amazing that something snapped when he got a sniff of the crown

Spot On !!!!

Means, motive and opportunity- you’d think any lawyer could see R III is the only one who meets all criteria.

Whoa boy, that was fast. Figured you would be weighing in 🤣🤣. I have five minutes before work and it’s read this or meditate....I’m going to choose meditation but I can’t wait to watch the fireworks later 💥😬💥

I've been thinking a Richard III on trial type book might be good with each side giving arguments and counter arguments. I'm no Ricardian, but people usually tie themselves religiously to their position. There might be an audience for it.

I did enjoy The Lost King; it was a good story. I know that it took more than 10 years to locate him, etc. And, people were left out of the story.

Well there goes my dream of Dan Jones writing a book on Richard III...

Thorough, thought provoking and amusing. Just what I need. Can you understand Richard's actions without necessarily approving of them?

Ok, I finally got to sit down and read this. Must say I appreciated the explanation and background on the text at hand. Not surprisingly, this was more informative then the click bait-y article I read. Also thank you Dan for finally making the tit joke...took a while but you worked it in there. (Thats what she said. I’ll see myself out.)

I don’t think the fact that Buck came from a family who went for Richard at Bosworth discredits him. Anymore then it disqualifies what someone licking the Tudor boot said about Richard. I could see how being from a tragic Richard supporting family might set you on a path towards trying to learn and share about him as much as possible. Especially when all forces of the day would have encouraged the opposite. Doesn’t mean he should be automatically discredited.

Granted I’m an outsider and hobby historian (not even a good one) but I bristle at the attitude of many historians on this topic. Somewhere between aggressive certainty to jaunty condescension about a 500+ year old case with little to no direct evidence. (Recently started Dan’s War of Roses book so here’s hoping.) I’m no Ricardian, but it’s such a leap in a small amount of time from loyal brother to tyrannical kid killer, that I just can’t square the circle. It’s entirely possible he had them killed but also possible that he didn’t. I think Matthew Lewis’s hypotheses of the Princes being tucked away makes so much more sense with Richard’s personality, Elizabeth Woodville’s behavior, and the awkward situation they found themselves in. The point is we don’t know. The discovery of Richard’s body should tell us that crazier things have happened and we might just find out one day. Pride cometh before the fall.

Thanks for this! My child recently brought up Richard ³ and I had to remind her of the truth. I'll pass this along.

Ahh, connecting Richard with the OJ Simpson Trial, brilliant!

Also the bit about what lawyers do to get to the "Truth" is spot on. The lawyers I know work exactly this way even when they aren't in court.

A very interesting read. I'm not that up on Richard III as there seems to be an earth sized mountain of literature on him from many different perspectives. In fact I've only got one book on him (yet to read) by Matthew Lewis.

I must say though, when you mentioned the Master of Revels, I thought it would be a job about picking the toffee ones out. 😉

I spent Easter weekend in Leicestershire with the outlaws. A night away free board and lodging should never be turned away.

My son decided he wanted to go to the RIII exhibition in Leicester. In my opinion £15 well spent and the ticket lasts a year.

The one thing that really surprised me was how deep the grave actually was. Fair play to those involved with the dig and identification process.
