NEW TV SHOW!!!
From today you can watch my brand new documentary about the battle that made Henry V
Just before Christmas I hinted that there might be a little surprise dropping right about now. Well, here it is.
The subject is the Battle of Shrewsbury of 1403. That was the clash of arms in which a 16-year old ‘Hal’ - the future Henry V - took on a rebel army led by the house of Percy. The rebels very nearly killed young Henry, and almost took down the Lancastrian dynasty at a stroke.
I host the documentary along with one of my very favourite military historians, Professor Michael Livingston. Here’s the trailer:
You can watch The Battle of Shrewsbury from today, via the History Hit streaming platform. History Hit is a subscriber service - but if you sign up, you get your first 14 days of viewing free.
Click here to register and watch the film.
While you’re there, you can watch other shows I’ve made, including the two-part real history of Essex Dogs - a journey in the footsteps of Edward III’s army to the battle of Crécy in 1346. There are also films where I explore the history of the Knights Templar and the Crusades.
As thanks for being a loyal supporter on Substack, I’m sending you this trailer and link first. There’ll be plenty more like this coming in 2024, including my new, full-length biography of Henry V.
See you on the other side.

Dear Dan,
I know what I’m doing tonight now. I’m just wondering whether the viewing should be accompanied by a whiskey or a gin. 👍. Happy New Year to you and all of your followers.
BBC 4 finally repeated Elizabeth R. I have it recorded. I located a DVD copy of 6 Wives Of Henry VIII. And now this. Good things come in 3 apparently. No idea if that is true but it fits here.
