So just have to ask....are we ever going to get the “not a podcast, just a conversation” again. It was the highlight of my week! I know you’re crazy busy but.....
That was another excellent but not surprising elucidation of another past devilment not brought along by folks to America. Sort of yes i was offered pancakes when having breckers with my son as i went to as a teacher (though retired) for a good enough beating to Count As one of the traditions
Hopefully the lady in the picture had more success with pancakes than I did. Absolute disaster. Kids now eating Nutella straight from the jar! Great read!
Liberal, Kansas -- which is about as boring a place as you could possibly imagine has, since 1950, held a race on Shrove Tuesday against Olney, Buckinghamshire where the winner is the fastest at running while flipping a pancake. I have difficulty flipping a pancake standing still in front of my stove so I guess there is substantial athletic prowess associated with this tradition. I'm not sure why the practice started but it was famous when I was a young child in the 1960s and early 1970s. I'd like to think that this is a medieval tradition of some sort so, if you have some information on the historicity of the event, thanks for enlightening me. My father was born near Liberal, which is in the very southwest corner of a state that is nearly featureless. As my father used to say about Liberal, "It's not the end of the earth, but you can see it from the city limits." Thanks Dan!

No mention of lifting one’s tunic top, baring one’s tatas in exchange for cheap beads but I guess we here in ‘Murrica lost something in translation 😝
I wonder why Pancake Lady is barefoot...
It’s the last day of Carnaval in the south of the Netherlands (where I live) so I spend the last 5 days partying medieval style!
Thanks Dan!!! Happy Tuesday!
Accompaniment of choice for pancakes? Orange and sugar for me or golden syrup 😋
Hen emoji has a new appreciation! Going to blow my own trumpet, done English pancakes for breakfast and American for dinner. Have fun!
I live near Atherstone, Warwickshire. They still hold the Shrove Tuesday ball game, I believe the first one was 1199. Here's an article about this year's game - looking at the guy in the left picture, I can safely say I'm happy to stick to the pancakes!! https://metro.co.uk/2023/02/21/things-got-very-feisty-during-823rd-atherstone-ball-game-18324343/
To the IHOP!

British football fans? I think you mean English football fans. Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland fans are generally well behaved on their travels.
All this sounds like any given day from school. Happy times.
Perfect, you made my lunch decision for me! I didn't know anything about this, thanks on two counts
