When I was in Rwanda, a local friend could not fathom why we don’t do more community activities in the US. There they have days set aside just for community betterment and they work together to achieve it. Everything is organized starting at the village level. It isnt a cute idea they do now and then, it is an ingrained part of life. I found it an inspiring concept but also made me sad for the way things are set up here at home. Thank you for some morning reading.

Individualism is the problem. We worship the individual and disdain the collective.... see our reaction to masks for the best and most recent example.

I loved this Daniele! We often think that people in the past were massively different from what we are now. In reality our human nature hasn’t really changed that much, we still love to socialise and we all have our hobbies.

I think a guest writer was a fantastic idea!

Was loving everything about this post, until I got to this sentence- “Rather than being fuel for a righteous fire, books from other cultures were valued for their information.”

I read it 3 times and it’s stuck on my brain that we are more barbarous than the Middle Ages in today’s screwy political culture.

So. That will keep my mind churning today as I get ready to face another crazy political news day in America.

I have taken an interest in tulips in people's gardens. There are so many different colours. It's a great conversation starter.

Thank you so much Danièle! I completely agree on all counts. It's amazing the learning and compassion for others when one gets out of one's rut.

One of the four books my students read last month was How to live like a Monk, and they loved it. This month they have to read another three, including your book Crusaders. I hope they love it too, though I suspect that when they find out it's around 500 pages long they'll just hate me. I don't understand why the new generation of future historians don't like to read anything over 200 pages.

Yes! Definitely like the guest writer and great to have another thinker on the middle ages..

Thank you Daniele for the short essay and drawing on the modern equivalent. It makes you realise we need to be more medieval 😁 Not sure I'm up to reading Greek philosophy though
