Happy New Year and I hope you're finally on the mend. I too had that nasty virus. It's not Covid but it sure feels like it's evil twin brother.
Speaking of brothers... I read today about Prince William knocking Prince Harry down into the dog bowl. I can't decide if I'm impressed by the machismo of William, as a future King, or simply think it's a silly family disagreement that will now play out writ large on the world stage. This did have me thinking about Medieval arguments/fights between siblings.
There is Harold and Tostig, of course, and Carloman and Charlemagne -- maybe even Edward IV and George, Duke of Clarence. Who is in your top 10 Sibling Fight Club from the Middle Ages?
Fantastic stuff. Way to pique the interest with all these juicy titbits!
Hope you are well on the road to recovery now.
Now… despite you trying to put us all off the idea of you metal detecting, I think it would make an interesting video somewhere. With all your connections, I’m sure you could get permission to do a bit somewhere where you could find something pretty interesting? That aside, I’d certainly be interested in an article about the most amazing finds that have ever been come across from that same period maybe? That ring is stunning!
Looking forward to Wolves of Winter! Love that title.
Love the Substack, always been my favorite, and if you ask me.... which you did...I prefer the once a week. I can keep up on it better. I would love to see a bit on following a Crusade campaign like you did with the Essex Dogs, with the maps and all that. Been loving the "This is History"! Can't wait for the next chapter. Happy New Year to you and yours! Excited to see what this year brings.
ETA... More medieval ghost stories!!! Absolutely love!
Have you written a short history of the English Middle Ages, but from the point of view of the Scottish? Understanding all the Plantagenet and Tudor rumblings may look different through the prism of Scone and Edinburgh.
Also, I've studied the Battle of the Bulge quite a deal, but I never heard of this story. I bet you could adapt the framework and place into a side escapade in Wolves of Winter. (I could easily see this in a Bernard Cornwell novel - https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2022/12/24/christmas-eve-truce-1944/
Several things come to my mind after reading your post, but I think the most sincere one is get well soon, Dan.The only thing I wish you for this year is good health, because I'm sure you will succeed in your projects. All of them sound terrific and I will surely enjoy them.
How about something a little more social history based? Off the top of my head: medieval food, games, love & sex, childhood, city vs rural life. Or the climate/environment, increasingly cropping up in academic histories.
Well Dan, another Christmas down the pan! No sympathy from me, as we also had it at our house. Although I do, of course, wish you well, and a truly wonderful 2023.
Please do a metal detecting video. I’d love it. Just imagine if you really do discover something amazing. Just imagine!!
I’m pretty much obsessed with William Marshall and yes, I know you’ve spoken about him before but a really in- depth review would be fabulous. Or a book - it’s not as if you’re busy or anything. Feel better soon
It sounds like a busy and exciting year! Wish you all the best and a speedy recovery. For me personally I hope you can make it to the Netherlands this year🍀
I would love more on the York brothers and their fascinating relationship. Feel better soon.
I look forward to your new books. They all sound great. I still sit waiting patiently for somebody to write about the draining of the fens.

The hardest working man in showbiz.
Could you do something on the Lionheart's adventures on his way to the Holy Land and something on his adventures on his return from the Holy Land?
Fantastic stuff. Way to pique the interest with all these juicy titbits!

The year Jo got you the Peloton automatically negates all crappy xmas gifts, Jones. Hope you're feeling better.
Sorry to hear that you got the lurgy again. The mating walrus cough cracked me up because that’s what I had. No walruses came calling though.
A podcast series on Edward 3 and his sons would be interesting.

Hope you feel better soon! All of the above sounds amazing!
Anything about the Bishop Beaufort/ Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester/ Babby and Kid King Henry VI situ would be fab.......
