What books are you bringing on your yearly retreat to Crete this year?

Hey Dan - if you could bring back / happen up on somehow one medieval written source that we know we have lost (only having fragments left to us or it being referred to elsewhere but we don’t have etc.) what would it be and why? Cheers!

If Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury, had had a son, what do you think the possibly of a Neville Dynasty might have been over a Tudor Dynasty replacing the Plantagenets?

In an era when the idea of women ruling as queens in their own right was often frowned upon, and wars even broke out to prevent a woman from ascending to the throne (such as the Anarchy, when many switched their allegiance to Stephen instead of Empress Matilda), why was it more acceptable for a queen to serve as regent if the king was away or had died, leaving her to govern on behalf of a male child? Despite the temporary nature or reduced power of regency compared to kingship, regents still wielded significant authority.

Hi Dan, because the era’s tour is ubiquitous right now, if Henry V was a taylor swift era, what era would he be?

Hi Dan

I've just finished the book on Crecy by Michael Livingstone, with his Agincourt book on the to be read pile.

I was wondering if you could recommend any books on other medieval battles such as Towton, Bosworth etc?

Hey Dan,

A few days ago, I listened to the final EP6 of Danièle Cybulsie's "The Iron King". That was a really great series. In the last minutes, she covers off the curse of Jacques de Molay, the death of Clement V, Phillip and the collapse of the Capetian dynasty. All the loose ends were nicely tied together with her reference to the claim to the thrown of Edward III through his mother, Margaret of France. Here is my question: Do you think Philip the Fair would have stood out as so successful after 1307 if Edward II would have been stronger? Is Philip's reputation embellished by his adversary being so much less effective?

Maybe I should be asking Danièle this question. 😁

Hello Dan,

I have recently watched and enjoyed your video on History Hit about the Invasion of France/Battle of Crecy (I especially enjoyed the brilliant voice of the man who read the quotes from the Chronicles). One question came to my mind regarding the archers. I understand that they were very important but they must have needed a huge quantity of arrows. Who provided them at first place (the king, the earl or themselves)? Where did they get new ones from? Has anyone ever estimated about how many were needed for the Battle of Crecy? (I am aware that these are more than one. 🫢). Thanks.

To add to that…you have had medieval weaponry featured in some of your shows. Is there a book that about weaponry from this time you can recommend?

Hi Dan! If you could do a series alongside social historian Ruth Goodman, where you spend a few months living "back in time", what period would you choose? And how difficult do you think it would be for you to adjust to "living" in that time period?

Hey Dan! Hope you are staying cool. If you could discover one lost historical artifact, remains, etc (think Richard under the carpark or Ark of the Covenant) which one would it be and why?

With the UK in peak music festival / gig season at the moment (I saw Foo Fighters last week), were there medieval "headline" acts who were well known and would attract crowds to see them perform. Or was entertainment kept local with more local artists / musicians / actors?

As a student, I tend to listen to a lot of music during the assignment months and have found that music has been very helpful when doing research for an essay. Is there a genre of music, playlist or artist you gravitate towards when doing your research? I need recommendations!! I'm sorry if this is a rubbish question (I feel like it's not very history-related) ✨🌞
