Excellent photos. You know that Polish castle, if the authorities take it down, shouldn't it be taken down medieval style? Siege machines. Catapults. The whole 9 yards!

There’s a lovely little renaissance farm outbuilding that I have my eye on in Spain. Reasonably priced, absolutely nothing inside it, BUT view of the sea? Chatted with the owner a bit and he said I can use some Basque subsidy to help fix it up.

Most of the gold in Seville Cathedral was stripped by Napoleon- the pieces on show are nearly all plated replicas

Super fun podcast that is not a podcast 😝. Two things I know about Roombas…1) my parents always vacuum the carpet after the roomba because my dad does not like the tracks it leaves and 2) if your dog is not house broken, a roomba is ill advised.

That’s two game of thrones things you’ve been to this last couple weeks. The new prequel show had some filming done at St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. Put that in a book lol

I think I've taken exactly the same picture from the bell tower!

Am I the only one under 80 who hasn't warched Game of Thrones? Can I be banned from History, Etc for it 😳 ?

Dear Dan,

There is a lot to unpack in your audio note this week...

First of all, there is debate about the world's largest churches. How do you measure such a thing? Inside space? Consecrated space? the number of worshippers it can hold? The maximum number of worshippers who have attended? The reason why I pose these questions is because the Guinness Book of World Records (which is, after all, anal about such matters as largest, smallest, etc.) lists The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast as the largest church in the world. It was finished in 1989 and I visited it one weekend when I was working in the Abidjan, Ivory Coast in 1996. It's not a memory I will forget because the place is truly massive and is situated in a small clearing of a town in the middle of the jungle. It has the nickname "Basilica in the Bush" amongst ruder names that have most recently been used to describe a certain castle in Poland. I was wandering around the place when a service began and, off in the great distance, a group of 25 worshippers sat together close to a central altar. I then climbed what seemed like 10,000 steps to see the view from the roof but couldn't really look down because a family of wild chimpanzees had camped on the roof and were decidedly dangerous looking. I beat a hasty exit before my "distant relatives" decided to take an interest in me. Now, I've also been to the Cathedral in Seville and the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba. Both are massive and beautiful but fit much better in their surroundings compared to the church in Yamoussoukro. Technically, Haghia Sophia is, of course, a Mosque-Cathedral. In fact, it is a Cathedral - Mosque - Museum - Mosque and it is incredibly impressive and beautiful. It is one of my favourite places to visit on the earth.

Regarding a certain castle in Poland...one would imagine that, if you spent that much, indoor plumbing would be included and most likely a secret rocket launching spaceport for executing the second 'evil part' of the construction project which includes the portion about world domination. BTW, this construction reminds me of Putin's 'Secret House' that he claims isn't his (queue Shaggy singing 'It wasn't me...') https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-56007943 .

Finally, it may only be me, but I thought you were remarkably restrained about the G&R concert. That was the most interesting part of the podcast for me, or maybe second behind hearing about your lunch. 😂

It is fun to have the quasi-pods back. Thanks so much!

Let us know when you get around to going to the Hagia Sofia. I enjoy your travel photos. Perhaps you can put some those in a photobook, like the Colo(u)r of Time, and provide some historical information on them.
