My paternal Grandfather stormed the beaches of Normandy. My Grandfather never told my brothers or me about his experience. I have a couple stories one from my uncle and the other from my Dad, recently involving the moon landing. But, I think Saving Private Ryan gave us the visual of what that day was probably like.
