Glad you’re recovering, Dan! And Happy Holidays. My question is what were Christmas celebrations like in the medieval period for the average person? What were the popular traditions?

Happy Christmas Dan

During the Plantagenet period we often hear of military occupation of Ireland led by the great and the good - Thomas /Richard II/Richard Duke of York etc.

There never seems to be any detail about what actually happened during these campaigns. Is this because of lack of records or do historians prefer to concentrate on core French/English engagements

Is there any Irish Plantagenet books you would recommend?

Which Queen is more badass: Eleanor of Aquitaine or Isabella of France? I hadn’t known much about Isabella before this current series, and she’s been pretty bad-ass.

Glad you are recovering well and couldn't tell from your reading last night at the substack event (great evening, by the way).

Question - is there a Christmas food item that has been lost in time but deserves to be revived? Roast goose perhaps?!

If you were to design a Role Playing Computer Game, which subjects and eras would you pick? Would you base it on one of your books? Does anyone die of dysentery (asking for Oregon Trail fans)?

Hi Dan. Sorry to hear you've been unwell but glad you're on the mend!

How did Bodiam Castle (and any other similar sites) influence the medieval landscape, and what does this tell us about the impact of powerful lords during that time? Is Bodiam a typical castle or somewhat unique?

Merry Christmas to you and your family! Hope you have a great time!

How was Scotland able to throw off the yoke of English conquest but Wales was unable to do so? Was it just luck, or was there a deeper structural or military reason the welsh were unable to regain their independence after Edward I’s conquest?

Merry Christmas Dan! Will you ever do a third series of Secrets of Great British Castles? I hope 2025 brings more castle content from you and a good rest at some point!

Hey Dan. That sounds painful. Could you provide the gory details by Mime please? No? OK.

I'm sure he's grateful to live in an era with antibiotics and good pain relief. (I hope).

Hello, Dan. Wishing you continued recovery and hope you're back at 100% quickly. As well as a history buff, I am also interested in transportation. I've read that Edward III made significant changes to the baggage train on his campaigns by utilizing many small carts and pack animals rather than big wagons with large teams of oxen in an effort to have more flexibility in travel paths. Can you tell us about any specific campaigns or battles that this impacted?

Dear Dan, Happy Christmas or as we say in Hawai'i Mele Kalikimaka

I would have loved to see you perform the Q & A in mime.

Perhaps for Christmas 2025 you could perform the Q & A in interpretive dance.

Merry Christmas! I love the work that you do! How can someone without a education/background in history do better quality research on the Middle ages?

This is not another question but an information about an important artefact which have recently been presented to the public and is now on display. It is an amulett with a silver foil inside. Thanks to modern technique the text was made visible and proofed to be the oldest Christian text ever be found north of the Alps. If you want to know more about it follow this link: https://archaeologisches-museum-frankfurt.de/index.php/en/

Just thought you might be interested. 🙂

Merry Christmas, Dan.

Is there any aspect of medieval culture that you would like to see reintroduced into modern society? If so, why?

Greetings! I recently finished your book on the Templars, excellent, and am currently reading the book you recommended about Saladin by Jonathan Phillips, also excellent.

There appears to be no mention of Jewish people in either book.

Were they that much of a minority that they played no part in the politics at the time?
