I couldn’t make it to Grassington. Which is a shame because I absolutely love the place. Hope you had a brilliant time and enjoy the rest of the book tour. Can’t wait for my super special copy of Essex Dogs to land!

I have never been to Edinburgh but it is the top of my list to visit. The journey by train sounds amazing. (Perhaps you could do a side line as a travel writer?)

I would love to be at one of these events but I’m a bit too far away and I am too much of an introvert to be in a room with people I don’t know.

I’ve almost finished reading ‘Joan’, which covers the later period of the 100 years war. I’m feeling very pro French right now. I suspect I will feel differently when reading Essex Dogs.

Have fun on the next part of your tour.

Dear Diary (in a Scottish accent),

Now I want to go to Edinburgh.

With a book. Maybe an adventure story…. Something historical….hm.

California heat wave is too much to take. I want to imagine myself freezing cold crossing the English Channel 700 yrs ago.

Gotta find the right book.

Til tomorrow……

A marvellous window painting for Essex Dogs and your name in bigger letters than the book title on the cover of Powers and Thrones mean you're doing something right...

Enjoy the tour, Dan, and everybody who can go.

I always enjoy your posts, but today I enjoyed this one in particular because it feels full of good vibes. Also you made me smile remembering some things from my childhood.

Congratulations, good luck, and enjoy your tour!

(If you enjoy travelling by train, maybe one day you can do it through the Andes.Beautiful landcaspes and a breathtaking experience.)

I'm very excited to read Essex Dogs--just ordered a signed copy (which I very rarely do!). Your reasons for writing this book as fiction echo my own reasons for delving into historical fiction. When I dive into my historical studies, when I'm sitting in the archives leafing through old papers, it's easy to feel like I have a connection to these people. Of course, we can't ever REALLY know what people thought in their own heads, we can't even trust what they wrote in their diaries. But fiction allows us to play around with things and explore what things MIGHT have been like. Sometimes I think fiction comes pretty damned close! Without proof, of course, these things need to stay in our fictional playgrounds rather than in academic works, but it's so fun to explore all the "what-ifs" in that way.

Great post! I want to take that train ride someday!

I’m actually visiting Edinburgh in October. I will only be there for two days. I always try to visit a bookstore, a coffee shop, and a brewery/pub in every city I travel to. Any recommendations on which to try out?!

Hate I can’t toddle off to my neighborhood bookseller for a meet and greet- but we in the US will live vicariously through your diary. Edinburgh is a definite bucket list item.
