How do you have surgery for 30 days? Without Dan’s favourite painkillers either (not that I’m implying Dan is an opioid head, just he won’t travel back in time without them...). Some boy this Henry V. Why do you think modern scholars keep wanting to poo-poo him as a king? Seems to have been pretty effective for his time. Of is it just that, he’s too medieval for most?!
I watched an episode about the surgery this week. Henry’s doctor had to gradually increase the size of the hole in order to insert an instrument he created to remove the arrow head. Gives me the willies just thinking about it.
Love this article! To your point about Henry V, I just watched the Battle of Shrewsbury documentary on History Hit. Excellent. But I will admit to cringing a bit when Henry's battlefield injury was examined in depth with a demonstration of how the arrow was removed. Highly recommend this documentary to all here. Lastly, how are you at darts, Dan? Just curious!
Thanks, as usual, for an interesting post, Dan. Ageism is not attractive in the young or in the old. We should judge people by their accomplishments and talents not by their age. There is nothing particularly extraordinary about a young person having good reflexes and eye-hand coordination. It is notable that Luke could demonstrate coolness and concentration in the face of such a media scrum but that would apply to most any age. Now, if Luke was 75 years old and able to compete at that level -- that might be interesting, but I doubt it would have seen the same media coverage and that is even more true if Luke were 60. I think this represents a double standard.
Your article set me thinking about these double standards. For example, as we know from your podcast, King John died of dysentery by basically shitting himself to death. There are some among us who think, "He received his just desserts for dying in such an undignified way., covered in his own shit". Yet Henry V also died of dysentery by shitting himself to death and yet his is remembered as a hero's death for suffering in the same way as so many of his fighting men who also died in their own shit. Surely, shitting yourself to death cannot be undignified and heroic at the same time. So, why are John I and Henry V treated so differently in relation to this whole shitting thing? I mean, after all, shit is shit and, to paraphrase Shakespeare, a shit by any other name would smell as fowl.
There! I set myself a target of 10x shits used in a grammatically correct manner in this post and I've accomplished this goal. We need to take our little vistories where we can. I'm going to have a pint now... 😁
You continue to amaze me with your vast knowledge of so much of life and your broad comprehension of people of all walks of life As though their interests are wonderful whatever direction they go. Today so many hate mongers have such narrow minded criticisms of all others interests. You just make room for us all to venture forth being our real selves. Wishing you all the very best and hoping you have a long productive life never changing your way of approaching life styles of others! A cool breeze on a hot day and a warm fire on a cold day or oh on a hot cold day oh yeah! Free to just being a great person and allowing others that same sane opportunity💕
So good to be able to be a part of something so interesting so late in my life. (89 years old on 1/25 Who knew life would get better this late in life❣️)
As soon as I read “KID DOES THING”, I knew where you were going with this. The arrow/honey dowel/ surgery part of the new doc had me riveted...but I don’t think they mentioned it took THIRTY F***ING DAYS!!!!!
If you’re playing the long game on promoting this Henry the Fifth book, it’s working. Only had a very passing interest in him. He’s always been a pit stop for me on the way to The Wars of Roses. Now I have to know everything!
I enjoyed finding out about the National Dart Competition . Growing up in the States it’s something I’m unfamiliar with. As I’ve gotten to travel to Great Britain in the past few years, I’ve started watching European Football and rugby. I may have to add darts!
And since I’ve become familiar with you and your works (books and film) I’ve learned about all the historical accomplishments of “young” men who accomplished victories in battle and becoming rulers. Can’t thank you enough as always for broadening my horizons!!
This post reminded me one of my bad habits as a teacher: every time my students whine like babies about having to read a 250-page book, I remind them that Alexander the Great was possibly younger than them when he was Aristotle's pupil. So,after looking at their faces, I add one more book.
why we underestimate the young(er) and poo-poo their talents and thoughts will never make sense to me, but good for the little guy. hope he wins his darts and someone sneaks him a pint. well done on bringing it around to history.
Hubby reads the Daily Mail and shares all the good stuff with me. So I'm familiar with Luke the Nuke.
I think there's something deeper in the if you're good enough, you're old enough. Does that mean our younger folks just aren't good enough? Except Luke of course. :)
My husband teaches 7th grade Biology. They can't go outside for break time, as parents worry they will get cold and dirty. We live in the southeastern U.S.
I was decent at throwing darts. We had a board in our basement growing up. It never occurred to me to make a career out of it! Loved the documentary on the Battle of Shrewsbury. I had been waffling on getting History Hit and that was the show that made me sign up. So much great content on there!
At what age is a kiddie king viewed as old enough to reign by himself, does it depend on his actual suitability or more on the willingness of regents or councillors to make way (or gotten rid of rather forcefully)‽
It’s an inexact science… depends on the king. Edward III and Henry VIII were champing at the bit. Henry III and VI basically had to be forced to grow up (without much success)

The medical notes on the operation are extraordinary- as for the rest, well, my take will be revealed in the autumn!
Tiny bits and giving healing time over a long period , allowing the deepest parts to mend successfully it would seem . . .
Watch Dan's special on History Hit. The explanation of the surgery, using a gel block, still makes me wince.

Better at watching darts than playing alas

I think that’s a pint well earned

Not so much a long game as a current obsession…. Am also writing podcast scripts on Henry III so I have a head full of Hals…

All are welcome at the oche
lol … I had to look up what that was! Learning as ever!
Same! Plus its pronunciation 🤭
Dan, your mission, if you choose it (which undoubtedly you won't) is to find out if any of these historical greats ate a kebab after every victory 😂
Feels like the answer to this one may lie in the crusades

So cruel
Naaah... do you think so? Maybe next time I'll add Powers and Thrones 😂

It felt for a minute there that I wouldn’t get on to the history at all

Basically yes
Used to work in a hospital lab
And took notes in morgue when things did not go well

That's it. Discuss and shake your heads.

I'm a big fan of darts. One country where it is growing in popularity is Germany. Luke Littler is a once in a generation talent
