Hello from the Chalke Valley History Festival, where well-heeled history fans rub shoulders with grimy fingered re-enactors from almost any era you can think of.
My conversation by the bar this evening is an old one - but a good one. Which warriors, from any age of history, would win a fantasy battle. One rule: the battle is fought on the ‘home field’ of the older power. Another: no nuclear weapons.
Otherwise, the field is open. So… all things being roughly equal, who wins a fair fight? The Romans? The Mongols? The modern US? Answers in the comments, and I’ll round up the best of them in the next episode of First Draft…
From what I’ve read, including “Powers and Thrones,” it sounds like it would be the Mongols. However, we need to give a shout-out to the scrappy Ukrainians or maybe even the Finns—anyone brave enough to smack a rolled-up newspaper on the nose of the Russian dog.
