So glad you are riveted to W&P! I read it nearly 50 years ago when I had my first child and sitting reading this massive tome while waiting for the baby’s weigh in at local clinic Got me some strange stares from other mothers! The TV adaptation wasn’t bad either.

Happy holidays Dan! Envy you Crete. Last went there in 2016, for a blissful 17 days of beach, books, and café frappe! Fabulous., and that year in was raining in England.

I first read War and Peace aged 17, while doing my A-Levels and an S-level in History, which was then harder than the A'Level instead of a trail run. It, alongside my father's war service in the 8th Army, sparked a love of history across all eras. Like you I couldn't put W&P down - it came everywhere with me, though the weight in my school satchel (yes, still had the leather things back then) was prodigious! You'll finish it before the flight home, but not sure about the rest of the TBR pile!

An inspiring review of W & P… I will add it to my huge TBR pile. Maybe when I retire 😝

War and Peace is one of my favorites. Tolstoy is just one of the best. Anna Karenina is another great one!

So glad that War and Peace is "ruining" your reading plans, as it's a heck of a good book and my absolute favourite. Not a conventional novel, nor a history book, but an oscillating blend of both, as Tolstoy himself put it.

Enjoy your holiday and the adventures of Andrei, Pierre, Natasha, Nikolai, Maria, and the rest of the cast. I hope you'll have a blast.

As Richie Rich said in Bottom about War and Peace, "well, they spelt the Count wrong!' 😂😂

Enjoy the holiday.

Sounds like a lovely holiday, as I enjoy my staycation here in Los Angeles I am jealous as hell. Driving out to Malibu isn't nearly as exotic or interesting as Crete, although the tourists seem to like it so maybe I am just jaded.

Fun Fact, I finally read War & Peace when I was about 41 or 42 after having avoided it for most of my adult life and like you fell madly in love with it! It is one of my all time favorite books. It's funny, poignant and the pop-outs of the historical narrative in between sections gives everything a perspective and framework that I just adored. I am so glad you are enjoying it - it makes me feel a little less insane when people ask me about books I recommend and every time I say War & Peace they look at me funny, so Thank You for sharing the love!

I am packing to leave for Istanbul in 6 days, and can almost taste the salted cheese……. Almost stopped reading there. That’s all I need: cheese and sun and a view (preferably of some ancient church and palm trees).

War and Peace, huh?

Enjoy!

Very entertaining Dan! I hope you're having a great time. The Palace at Knossos picture is great. I love it there even if there are lots of questions about the veracity of the reconstruction. It makes me want to fight the Minotaur or "bull jump". 😂

On this side of the world it's winter. It's a quiet and particularly cold Sunday. This week I received an avalanche of bad news, and this post has been the only thing that made me smile. Thank you, Dan!

Pdt. I read W&P when I was 17, and I read it 2 more times years later. Enjoy it!

Hope you and the fam are having a wonderful holiday. Make sure you don’t do too much work and enjoy the cooler temperatures over there. My daughter just said, “it’s like the devil is having a barbeque in Yorkshire!” And that’s exactly what it feels like 😂
