Great list and I love the run down on them all.

I'm glad the Black Prince came in second though, otherwise I might have felt the need to head into Leeds City Centre and tear his statue down. 😂

Where's John History? I've wondered if Richard II would probably be considered a sociopath or psychological disorders we could say some of the royals might have had.

John History declines to comment. (Although he’s secretly flattered to be mentioned).

Actually, it’s a crapshoot diagnosing even modern day figures. I was at a cocktail party with a bunch of shrinks right before the 2016 election and had the MOST disturbing conversation with one of them about our President Elect.

Disturbing because the expert refused to say there was anything to diagnose there.

Apparently if the personality disorder is not causing you any issues, than is it really a problem?

Sooooo- these old princes may have had a slew of personality issues; but if it didn’t hinder them….was it really a disorder?

Wow! I'm gonna msg you lol ❤️ but yes, if the narcissist's behavior is not affecting anyone else then *technically* they are not a diagnosable narcissist.

Girrrrl we could write a BOOK or at least a cracking article. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤭❤️

I love what you are doing with Substack. And I particularly like the "if you think THIS current guy/idea is bad, look at THESE historical guys/ideas aspect" which you are very good at. And of course, these tidbits helps a reader understand the past more fully.

Dan needs to embrace clickbait. Seriously.

He could also teach us fussy academics a few things about how to engage a 21st century audience. We are woefully stuck in the past and swiftly sinking. Dan's brand is dynamic and engaging... the two key components that modern academia are sorely lacking!

Well, I'm fussy but not an academic, totally an amateur. I think Dan's trick is to tell the reader about real people, the kind of people that the reader knows living at a different time. I love the fact that academics read him! Plus his understanding of social media is amazing and a lot of fun to be a part of. Cheers!

My favorite post yet. A quick question - didn’t Edward I rail against Edward II because Ed II wanted to give Gaveston Cornwall? Which was already promised to his step brother?

If only Edward I had known that queer landowners actually drive up home prices....

*le Gallic shrug*

These amuse-bouche delivered right to my inbox are an absolute delight. Well done Jones, but I expect nothing less from you, because you consistently deliver quality.

One small quirky request if I may indulge your particular niche of irreverence for just a moment please... as a queer woman I'm obsessed with boybands, in the same way that queer men are obsessed with Madonna/Britney. Yes, straights, this is a thing, don't make it weird.

Pretty please, Mr Jones aka Castle Daddy, sir, would you create a detailed post with boyband tropes as medieval kings? This sort of content may be more popular than you realize. But even if it's not, your queer audience broadly will appreciate it, whether we're out or not. ❤️

Interesting list. I had always heard the Black Prince described heroically, so the description of him was new to me. Though I’d have probably found out eventually, since I’m currently reading “Powers and Thrones.” Really good so far. (Though I always felt that the Middle Ages ended with the Renaissance, especially since many Renaissance-era people, particularly artists and architects, actively opposed and even mocked medieval traditions. So your choice to end at the Reformation is an interesting choice.)

I think I’d add John’s over glorified older brother.

harsh rating on the father of the English Parliament. It worked out well enough that Prince Edward (maybe the greatest English Prince, since he saved the throne and all) kept part of the system going.

My own pick is William Adelin, who went on a booze cruise and sank his family's dynasty.

Premier list! some new things I didn't know, thank you! And I'm not embarrassed that they are my ancestors. LOL

Richard 1 often escapes bad press because of the Robin Hood legend but was every bit as useless and unpleasant as his brother.

Could it be argued that the worse princes in history are either those that aren't actually destined to be King, i.e the spares, or the ones who have to wait an eternity to become King?

Prince Bertie (Edward VII) was a wayward character and even his son Prince Albert Victor was rumoured to be Jack the Ripper. Indeed, Albert's brother, the future George V was extremely harsh to his own children.

Going back and the end of the Stuart Dynasty, Prince James (James II) the last catholic monarch and brother of Charles II hadn't learnt from the mistakes of his father, Charles I, and also found himself on the receiving end of a revolution but at least kept his head. This despite spending his childhood and therefore life as a prince living in exile and ignoring all the danger signs exhibiited by his father.

The Prince Regent (George IV) although not a spare had to wait a long time to become a full time King and his extravagant lifestyle whilst waiting to become king led to public ridicule.

I appreciate none of these are medieval by the way!

Great list! The monarchy seems to be rife with these characters. It would certainly fill an entire volume if you took it up to the 21st Century.

Are these truly the worst? If i had to pick one, it’s Simon de Montfort. Hanging his junk off his nose is a little too good for him. 😒
