Thanks for reminding us that the Middle Ages were just as colourful and vibrant as we are today (and sometimes more so), Dan. I remember fondly looking at the 14th Century wall paintings in the Byward Tower at the Tower of London and thinking, "Those ages don't look so dark to me...". I'll have to book Dover on my next visit.

Dover Castle was one of my favourite episodes of Secrets of Great British Castles and it's great to hear how they've adapted Maison Dieu. It sounds like a brilliant place to spend time.

I'm so jealous of all of you who live in the UK that can just go visit these castles! To be able to see some of the places where so much history has happened would be fantastic.

Your story about the fire alarm in Dover reminded me of a similar situation, but with a false tsunami warning, during a vacation in Valparaíso. Definitely not a pleasant way to wake up in the middle of the night.

Thanks for your review of the Maison Dieu and including photos, Dan. Maybe we’ll get to Dover Castle, as well as some others, on our next trip to Britain. If we do, I will see if I can book us a room at the Maison Dieu.

Loved the Article. English Heritage have a flat there over one of the gates. I keep meaning to book a weeks stay there.

Regarding the tunnels in the cliffs...you wrote they were cold war era. Actually they were where the Dunkirk evacuations were coordinated from so a little bit older than cold war.

Interesting reading that Dover was a dump back in the reign of Henry II. Some things never change🫣
